Boiler Fault Finding & Repair / sources/courses?

Hello all

Over the past year or so I have been learning a bit about boilers, how they work/components/fault finding logic. I have a few DVDs and a few books that I have been learning from.

I have been doing some plumbing work, just in my house, for my family and a few friends, over the past 3 years or so, when they had a problem, just jobs like fixing toilets, taps, motorised valves, ballvalves, leaks, thermostats, radiator valves, blockages.

I'd like to learn a lot more about boilers, this website is very good and there are a lot of good, knowledgable, experienced gas/boiler engineers on here who I have read some posts off recently.

Are there any sources/training courses available to attend to learn more about boiler fault finding and with "hands-on" training/practice? ? I have never repaired anything on a boiler, except for topping up a few systems with a filling loop and key in my house/sister's house! and would like to learn a lot more if possible.

If anyone has any information I would be most helpful.

I am not doing this for money, even if that sounds a bit sad/odd, I really like doing it as a hobby/for enjoyment

Hobbies can kill people and tinkerers are the worse especially in the gas field unless you are properly trained and on the Gassafe register then you shouldnt be messing around with it

Sorry, I am gas qualified: CCN1, CEN1, CKR1, HTR1, WAT1 and CPA1 and have had a portfoli. I did some work with some gas safe plumbers, mainly CP12's, Servive's and installs about 18 months back.

This book is quite well thought out and sticks to system issues rather that boiler faults.[/url]

you should join the combustion chamber and then we can help you along further with your training as in who to approach etc ,some mnufacturers training is excellent whilst others leave alot to be desired

I have searched online for some manufacturer's training - BAXI have a few courses and Vaillant too, Vaillant said I could attend with CCN1, and CEN1. I am not gas safe reg at the moment.

I have also found a Mr Combi 1 day training course which seems very good. Have you been on this yourself?

Heard it was crap, so no. Baxi's courses, however, are excellent.

So you did the short course through the Job Centre in the end then?

I didn't do any course through a job centre. I paid my own fees out of my own money mate. I already had a bit of gas knowledge/experience so it was just adding to that.

Mr Combi crap is it? It looks good on the website, but thanks for yiur advice mate.

Baxi courses are based in Dartford I believe, they do 2 boiler courses and an electrical one about using a multimeter, etc.

I really want a course that lets you do some "hands on" inside a boiler...

if you want to learn about repairing boilers to go out an make a living just say so!! dont buy the hobby bit whats fun about traping your fingers etc!

the baxi ones have to be done in a certain order
basic electrical appreciation
combi appreciation
fault finding
i think thats the order and the courses i went to at warwick were very useful and i cant see dartford being any different

Mr Combi is good his course is for basic fault findin I have known him 20 years an he honestly tries his best an is patient he is an ex vokera engineer an is one of us . I sent my son on it an he found it useful

have to say its all down to experience.wish that could be said for the amount of times i forgot the different bolt size from the other 2 on a vaillant 242 E pump assembly.sure bunnyman knows what im on about

What im basically saying is though,you get to know each boilers pitfalls,what to lookout for. what to avoid etc.and im afraid that will only come with time and with a bit of help on the job if lucky.reading a book is all well.but interpreting it to on site diagnosis is a bit different.
