How many years do I remember of poor and bad attitude and arrogance and loudness from some of these trade outlets towards customers; from personal experience if they worked for me they would be sacked on the spot. Recently I went into a well known plumbers merchants and discussed a replacement pump the person I was dealing with a great chap, then one other employee shouted across the room in what can only be described as argument on what I had described; piping and matching an existing pump and its position, finally I quietly and politely made my point and he shut up. I suppose the trade hasn't changed much in 45 years.

I remember many years ago we had an account with a very large timber merchants; who at one time were most probably the largest pre war and post war importers. We used softwood and hardwoods and via long standing account collected lengthy timber that we processed. One day I visited to collect an order and I was passed from one to the other to the other to the other employees who did not want to serve me, Finally after about 40 minutes of running around the large yard I was sent to the rear of the site to be dealt with. When I asked the chap to let me have lengths of the best Stuff, right at the top of the stacks, he blew a gasket waving his hand about and unbelievably telling me he was busy, he was not busy at all, So......here we go, as a polite and well spoken person who never lost his temper I ran up the stack about 30 feet high and grabbed a long heavy length of timber and shouted; Catch this, he did as he fell back. Good God I thought I had killed him, he recovered and loaded me up and off I went to the office to make a rather direct complaint about the service considering that we had dealt with them for years. The next time I visited it was amazing, they called me Sir, and could not do enough for me and it remained so thereafter. What a shame that one has to use one's temper to instill into those who you as a customer pay their wages that a little politeness and services cost nothing at all.

Don't you think things are much better now, in general?
Years ago it was nigh on impossible to find a polite store man in the motor trade, these days they couldn't be more helpful.....likewise my local builders merchant (Jewson owned).
I guess it helps a lot if you are pleasant and grateful to them of course - which comes naturally to us Geordies
John :)

You lost your temper, but that was 'many years ago'.

That approach might not get you to be called 'Sir' nowadays, and you may well end up with a record for knocking the man over with timber.

Agree with your main point about service, though.

Troll.
Yada, yada, yada.
Blah blah blah.

Are any of your stories true?

Bit harsh isn't it noseall!! ... I remember many moons ago going into a electrical wholesale depot with a mate who used to fit alarms and my mate said the guy behind the counter was a right miserable/moaning thought he knew everything asshole... anyway we went in and there was a couple of guys in front of us and the guy at the front was asking for something but did not know what it was called but he was describing it to the asshole .... the asshole tried to ridicule him in front of all the waiting customers and the guy waiting to be served just grabbed his lapels ,pulled his over the counter and give him a few short digs... but harsh I thought be all the guys in the que said he had it coming to him... weeks after he was a most helpful delightful chap

No telling what the people behind counters will be like is there? I used to go to a main agent in the Midlands years ago to get bits for the Minis we had then. Lovely people in the stores there. Knowledgable and really couldn't do enough to help. Moved down here and the local British Leyland (or whatever they were calling it that week) place was the same.
Whatever they are selling you just seem to get the odd place with "bad attitude". I generally just avoid those places wherever possible.

In Jewsons years ago - the last time I used them.

Wanted 6 feet of 4x2, they only had longer pieces, fair enough, bought 10 feet (3m).
Asked if it could be cut at 6 feet so that I could get it in the car.

Resulted in being directed to an area where there was a hand saw.

And isn't it great that all our customers aren't arrogant condescending pr*cks

(read a few of the OPs other posts for background material)

Quite frankly a lot of merchants hire people that are thick as pig sh1t as they are the only ones willing to accept the working conditions and pay.

Just been in Travis, they had an elderly Jewish guy in there returning a 1metre piece of skirting as it was not needed, after trying to explain why they could not take it back into stock [the old boy assured them they would be able to sell it]they refunded him and threw the timber in the bin.Much to the amusement of everyone in the shop [customers and staff].

Market forces.
Poor management results in poor, unmotivated staff.
Poor staff with bad attitudes turn away customers and encourage them to shop elsewhere.
Lack of customers results in shops closing down as they are not making a profit.
Shops closing down result in staff and management losing their jobs.

Everything sorts itself out eventually!
