Tesco bin 50 tons food a week due to HGV driver shortage

"As a nation, our mindset when it comes to lorry drivers has to change, he claims: “We need to make lorry drivers feel more loved - these guys do an essential job.”

There is not & never has been a shortage of LGV drivers.

The term "shortage" in this case refers to a lack of qualified & experienced drivers prepared to endure the pay & conditions of a type of road haulage they refer to as a "shopping trolley".

It is a failure of the supermarkets supply chains to secure a robust haulage system. There are very many independant road haulage co's who won't touch the supermarkets with a bargepole.

I see Stobart's tractor units regularly pulling Tesco's trailers.

Ha ha

The problem seems to be a severe shortage of drivers....caused by loss of freedom of movement.

Low wages according to the RHA, and covid caused a halt to training and testing so thousands of driving positions couldn't be filled. Brexit may have contributed in a very small way, but the whole of Europe is facing a shortage of HGV drivers

I think fillyboy is behind the times.

I asked because you said I was behind the times and put up a 2018 link, you've now added another link, more up to date which says:

However, the survey also found that European companies are expecting a 17% shortfall in drivers this year. The 10% increase is on account of the extra demand created from economies across Europe recovering as vaccines allow lockdowns to be relaxed.

Which confirms what I said, ie: there is a europe wide shortage of drivers, it's underpaid and with poor working conditions.

Again, there is not & never has been a shortage of LGV drivers.

These companies who moan & whinge need to look inside themselves & ask the difficult questions of why very few qualified & experienced drivers wish to work for them.

Also companies make it very difficult to get into, even if you pass your test no one like to take on rookies and makes it virtually impossible, only by chance or pot luck or working for a firm that pays peanuts and has rubbish tractor units and poor working conditions can you get in on the game.

Truck drivers money isn't horrendously poor, but a lot of the work is away from home for periods of time and it tends not to suit families, and the pay isn't significant enough.

The real money in haulage is either be an inter country driver, or a specialist, like dangerous chemicals etc.

It's also not advertised well, re pay and conditions, not many people leave school/college and want to do lorry driving, it's another one of them taboo jobs where people think only the thickos can be lorry drivers and they be better off going to uni and then working at McDonald's or Costas for the rest of there lives.

This unhealthy fascination with going to uni and only accepting those who have degrees for jobs isn't good for the UK.

Some people think that’s the be all and end all of education. I know quite a few people that have a degree but not an ounce of common sense.

I know a few people who don't have an ounce of common sense without having a degree...

Which group do you fall into?
