Immigration at a record level...

More like why should we allow this? They're here to study, presumably for 3 or 4 years. Why do they need to bring all the rellys from Islamabad, Beijing, or wherever. If little Johnny from Redruth goes to study in Aberdeen, he wouldn't normally drag his family along.
But he can't. There are no rules that allow this at the moment. People can apply to bring a spouse or child, but only if they can fund their stay themselves.

But I guess you prefer students come here steal our boys and girls? Or should they all be celibate because they're learning, like priests?

Do we have spare housing for all these extra people? How old are these 'students' with wives and kids? But the most important question is, do they all go home or try to linger in this country after their studies? Seems like poss another way in.

The sad truth is that when there was freedom of movement with the EU then people came and went (both in and out) as they pleased and jobs that the indigenous lot wouldn't do were being done...

But apparently the EU lot were 'stealing our jobs', and yet there was no rush by the indigenous lot to fill these 'stolen jobs' when freedom of movement ended...

Therefore immigration has increased from elsewhere, and those people are less likely to leave unless forced to do so...

Thus the population will carry on increasing and the home grown policy failures will simply get worse!

The latest wheeze that may not be popular with those who voted for a certain policy...

"The Times reports that teachers from abroad are being wooed with an "extra £10,000" in a recruitment drive by ministers to fill vacancies in England. The paper says hundreds of maths, science and language teachers will be brought in from countries, such as India and Nigeria, this year.

Unions have told The Times it is a "desperate" attempt to avoid giving existing staff a bigger pay rise. The Department for Education says it is actively looking to boost the number of qualified teachers."

I don't recall having to pay out such sums to EU country teachers to come to the UK...

And wasn't the idea of stopping freedom of movement being a halt to the exploitation of cheaper workers?
(Which in this case appears to UK teachers!)

It's all gone very badly wrong in the corporate governance capital of the world!

You know full well that someone can't reply when 'insufficient privileges' is imposed simply for telling the truth ;)
Here's my post again then in a thread that you do have sufficient privileges to reply in. ;)

What do you think 'plod' should do about situations like this?

It will be at this point that Ellal changes the subject, switches to repeat, gets abusive or disappears from his own thread.

Feel free to answer here. (y)

Again, It will be at this point that Ellal changes the subject, switches to repeat, gets abusive, completely ignores the question or disappears from this thread too.

If you want really low levels of immigration then train up UK workers, invest in schemes to expand UK skills and research, make childcare cheaper so more women can get into to work and we can increase our birth rate, make having children less expensive, improve education
Have to admit that I agree with all of the above.
The fertility rate for indigenous Brits is around 1.6 children, which is well below the replacement rate necessary to keep the population at its present level.
Without immigration the UK population would be shrinking.

The current government says it hates foreigners and then brings them in and then blames the foreigners and everyone else why services are failing and the likes of Motty lap it up year after year.

This absurd economic policy does not favour the working person.

You can have free enterprise with a strong public sector they are not mutually exclusive. The private sector is best placed to try and test new innovations and technologies - let the market find out who the winners and losers are. Government should be left to deliver public services as efficiently as possible and not contract it out like some buyer of services.

There is a place for the private sector and public sector - it's not private good public bad and neither private bad public good.

We don't need a publicly owned car manufacturer but we do need a publicly owned and run railway service as its more efficient than the current private monopolies.

I believe that its not possible to control immigration, legal or illegal any longer.
The level of legal immigration will driven by the demands of the economy, the policy of short termism by politicians telling the people that they can have their cake and eat it, this has led to the present crisis.

Illegal immigration will continue because the EU has no incentive to control it.

It's not the EU that needs to control it.

It's us. Do we have the desire and incentive though. Or is our Government just making the right noises (for some)

No, its the EU.
If a Virus breaks out in France, is it up to the British to stop it spreading across the Channel.
Having said that, France shouldn't be held totally responsible for illegal immigration into Britain, the EU policy of expansion and open borders means that there will be no solution to the 'Dinghy problem' anytime soon.

Those who linger on are usually contributing to society. We've had international students coming here for decades, it's never been a problem before now. But most obviously go home.

At best indeed...

Weren't we told that the UK would take back control of it's own borders?

So what the EU does or doesn't do is no longer a concern for the UK...

After all, the UK decided to unilaterally withdraw from the Dublin III regulation !
