I couldn't believe what I was watching i.e. the content of what they were reading out, and then to assert it's fine for kids to have access to this stuff.

Yeah, so with the exception of the character who fantasies about BDSM, which we only have out of context (do the other characters then say 'thats pretty ****ed up?'), none of that induces a moral panic.
For back story some of those books have been on reading lists for 12+ and have since been removed or moved to older groups.
Do you know how explicit sexual descriptions get in teenage reading content? This isn't notably different, except it covers LGBT content which we know makes some people uncomfortable.
