OMG Religion

That's me in the corner.....
That's me in the spot-light...

God im board.....ooppss

Weirdly - I do like being in churches - wonderfully prpeaceful
St Peters Basilica is awe inspiring and BIG. I said to the missus, whilst looking up towards the massive dome and said "see those the pigeons up there...."
To which she said "...they're people not pigeons, you blind berk.."
If you are a Catholic, then you have to go to Rome. The Pope wasn't home when we went.

No religion for me, I'm agnostic not atheist though.

I was brought up in a religious family, but opposite to koolpc, my parents suffering after a lifetime of believing makes me more inclined to be atheist.

The questions I cannot avoid are

1 Why are so many innocent kids born with such life affecting illnesses if they have done no wrong. But those that have done wrong can be free of illness and diseases. (see q2)
2 Apparantly you can live a very bad life, as long as you repent on your deathbed.
3 Which religion, and which god, there are so many to choose from.
4 Why are so many religious people uncaring regarding others, the total opposite to the teachings.

You can live a good life without religion, if you want to.

I was sent to a Quaker boarding school. I don't believe in God, but I did like their way of thinking, that you could sit in quiet contemplation in meetings and read if you wished. You could also stand up and say something if you felt so inclined.

I feel that I do not need religion to be able to run and structure my life. I know what being a good person means and I know right from wrong. I don't need a book or another person to tell me that.

I mentioned this in a coffee morning at a church and got a scathing look from one lady, who had asked if I go to church.

I dislike that the Church made itself to be superior to its subjects: "If you don't do as we say, and come to church regularly, you will go to hell!" and made poor people feel obliged to contribute towards the upkeep of the church.
Even the position of the church was very often designed so that it looked down on the people.

Yet some religious figures felt it was (and still feel it is) acceptable to do wrong in the name of God and escape hell, so do they truly believe in the concept?

Stephen Fry touched on a point in an interview where he mentioned a disease that affects childrens' eyesight. He argued that if there truly was a God, he would not allow that to happen.

Justin Passing, Denso, MNW67 etc....you claim not to be religious, but you are. Your religion is communism.
I'm assuming you put me in this pile?

Communism isn't a religion.

Communism is not something I support or want, any more than a fascist dictatorship, which appears to be your (and others) religion.

Filly

This is an attempt at a serious thread. So far, you have posted here to take the pee out of Notch and again out of denso.

OK, so you have thanked the dog, but you have made no post yourself.

Of course you don't have to, but it's a bit puerile to post that cr@p, don't you think?

And accuses others of........

Why can't we all LIVE AND LET LIVE by treating each other as a valued family member

Because a large number of the world's peoples see themselves as parts of other "families", be those in the blood sense, the national sense, the religious sense.

"The ties that bind" can also mean "If you ain't with us, you're agin' us".

Edit: Denso beat me to it.

Today is Battle of Britain day. In the week before the battle, the country had a national day of prayer, called by the King.

St Peters Basilica is awe inspiring and BIG.

It's supposed to be awe inspiring, this is one of their tools... you are blown away by the magnificence, scale and beauty of the place, and you come to associate this with God and religious ideas, it was a great technique before science started to come up with explanations for things.
Most of our scientific knowledge is very very recent in terms of human history, most people's religious beliefs come from intergenerational transmission of faith.

Just got back from Rome, didn't go to St.Peters but went to one of the other big impressive churches. Inside, people were taking a small candle from a box, lighting it and saying a prayer, they put a Euro in a slot for this privilege. Outside on the steps of the church, a scruffy old man was begging.

I'd find religion on my mind of a monday in my drinking days:

"Oh God! never again."
"Oh God! did i really do that?"
"Oh God! never mix barley wine and pernod again. Ever!"
"Oh God! did i really say that? she'll never speak to me again.
"Oh God! i should've been at work an hour ago. I'll never make it."
