Scam ??

What time difference is saved by queuing for a self checkout machine to become available versus queuing in line at the till?
Problem is you can not do a big or even anything like a big shop its like jenga in reverse trying to balance it on the other side of the till. Then there is always an item it refuses to weigh so you try throwing it on until you have to get assistance. Then assistance back again for the booze. I prefer a real person at the till as its quicker unless you have just a few items in a basket.

And using them takes someone's job away.
Virtue signalling at its finest. People that go to supermarkets and use that excuse get on my wick. If you’re that bloody bothered about people’s jobs, get your alcohol from an off licence, your fruit and veg from a greengrocer, your meat from a butcher, your fish from a fishmonger, your newspapers and magazines from a newsagent, your milk from a milkman, your toothpaste, deodorant etc from the chemists etc etc. If you’re lazy and in a hurry, like me, go to the supermarket and use the fastest method to get through checkout. I use the scan and shop. Never seen a queue in the years I've been using them.

It also removes one level of sweaty, germ ridden, coughed-in hands from my groceries.

Just as how you don’t bother with printing a receipt, the same principle applied to this situation.

Aren’t shop lifters the ones who knowingly steal things, without paying?

If he had ran away, scanned the items, never bothered with paying, the self-checkout machine would never had let you proceed. It would have asked for the item to be placed back on the counter, which was supposedly scanned, according to you.

So how is that possible?

It can’t happen.

If, according to you, he was a shoplifter, and ran away with the items.

Anyways - Lesson of the day: pay attention to the ending balance, shown on the screen.

Oh

Eh?

I use scan & go. So even for a larger shop, it's as straightforward as going to the kiosk (all items already scanned by me), paying and I'm out of there. Probably takes a couple of minutes if that. Rarely do I need to queue for a free kiosk.

Meanwhile the queues of folk at the traditional checkouts usually haven't moved.

So I'm saving a fair bit time wise and in addition, I don't need to put on pleasantries with a checkout assistant, some of whom throw items down the conveyor belt at 100mph.

As for grabbing a few items, it's still preferable to me to go to the smaller self checkout kiosks and, depending on how busy the store is, it's still quicker than queuing at the traditional checkouts. Actually, what idiot would queue when just buying two or three things when you can be out of there x minutes quicker?

I queue at traditional checkouts all the time.
I don't get paid to do their job and I don't get any discount for doing that.
Queues at checkouts started when they closed the traditional checkouts and opened the self checkouts.
Remember when supermarkets had dozens of checkouts people?
No much to queue at the time.
We're allowing machines to replace us in everyday life and this can only be a bad thing.
Look at kids nowadays: apart from the school hours, they have zero interactions with humans, that's why they're socially handicapped.
They use machines for everything, even to chat to one another (social media).
Then they panic when they're faced with a human to human discussion in person.
I see how slow people have become in analysing and respond to simple arguments and this is because we don't interact as much as before.
Some time ago I was "caught" by an employee of a managing company of my old friend's block of flats, throwing away a makeshift bed that some drug addicts had prepared in the communal shed area.
She accused me of theft by finding :ROFLMAO:
When I asked her the definition of theft she started panicking.
Then I told her that she needed to call the police because I was committing an offence.
She moved on saying that I was breaching health and safety legislation by throwing away "contaminated" items.
I asked her what act of parliament she was referring to and after a couple of "elf and safety" nonsensical answers she started crying.
An old woman listening to this hilarious conversation simply said "leave it, she's gonna have a panic attack in a minute".
And that is how inept most people have become socially.
A lot of people can't cope with reality because they're used to online interactions where you can say whatever you want and then simply not reply to the answers/questions that follow.
My advice: forget machines, deal with humans.

Do you get paid to fill your own car up with fuel at one of those new-fangled self service stations? ;)

You get 'paid' in time saved by not going to the butchers, the bakers, the candlestick makers. Honestly, how long would our weekly shop take if we bought all our items from traditional shops mentioned by me in post #17 as was once the case - and that’s assuming you have access in your town to those numerous shops?

Top tip... Peel the barcode sticker off a melon, stick it over the barcode on the most expensive champagne.

Melon barcodes peel really easily, and they have a really wide weight range so the computer will say it's all fine.

This tip came from a commenter on Radio 4 once. You could hear the panic in the studio after he gave this top tip on air.

I accept no responsibility for melon champagne legal troubles if anyone tries this.

If there's a choice I deal with humans.
I'm retired, so not in a rush.
I wasn't in a rush even when I worked, so...

I noticed the other day that you can remove your items from the scanned area before you pay.
I saw this in action this week

I was in Aldi earlier in the week, the people next to me had finished scanning all their items, then the red light came on..............next minute they had walked out

when I had a peek at their screen, it showed the "wait for assistance" warning -the buggers had wondered out without paying -items added up to about £35

this seems like a way to beat the self scan system

had I realised sooner I wouldve shouted out before they left.

Retailers just accept that some will nick stuff. Just as long as the amount they lose is less than the cost of minimum wage for someone to work there they'll carry on.

It's just numbers.

And... the higher the minimum wage, the more stuff needs to get nicked before they'll employ people. Socialism in action!
what total nonsense

do you ever think

Simply walking out without paying is a way to shoplift £35. Nobody will stop you.

I use scan and go, but I always worry I might put something thats not been scanned, so I end up keep checking what Ive put in

I suppose if you always do scan and go, you get used to the routine

What is nice is that you can have nice strong canvas bags in the trolley and you can pack as you go round -rather than a big scramble at the checkout conveyor

Virtue signalling at its finest.

Or decent human values. Some of us have them. Some of us don't.

People that go to supermarkets and use that excuse get on my wick.

Virtually the entire world gets on your wick, Mottie. The problem is not the world, it's you.

You forgot bread from a baker. We do have one of those, and we do use it. As for the rest, they are virtually non-existent where I live. Yes, we could maybe buy some toiletries from a pharmacist. We did try, recently, using a milkman again, but our consumption is too variable, so it wasn't flexible enough. Also it didn't keep as well.

It also removes one level of sweaty, germ ridden, coughed-in hands from my groceries.

Maybe you should stay indoors and have everything delivered, and not have to meet anybody.

That would also mean nobody would have to meet you. Win-win.

I've never used the self-checkouts, ever. I never bothered to fathom out how to use them, but only the local Tesco have them anyway, and most of our shop is in Lidl, next door. Av uses them, but only for the odd few items, from Tesco. One day..
