Holy Smoke

Why would anyone want to smoke cannabis or weed whatever it is, my son and his mates do it occasionally I go barmy, the smell is terrible.....

It's all the same shyte.
It obviously isn't. That's why there's a scale from A-B-C of harmful narcotics available to make things simpler for you to grasp.

Heroin and cocaine are clearly destructive over a long period of sustained use - cannabis, not so much. That's why decriminalisation and a defined line between it and them is necessary.

In that statement it looks like you are accepting that cannabis is destructive

The illegal drugs are all bad, just different in their effects. Do you know any long-term takers of illegal drugs? They turn into absolutely horrible people, particularly when their drug is in short supply.

There are no soft drugs

Have some cocaine Odds, cheer you up after the extreme far-right victories of yesterday!

(Great LP that, 'Slowhand').

My mum, a nurse in the 40s through to the 60s, told me many tales of drug use in those times amongst hospital staff. Many of the drugs that are illegal now, weren't then, and they were taken by doctors and nurses to help them through long shifts, and to help them through exams and studying etc. All sorts of ordinary people were popping pills, of pure pharmaceutical qualty, as a fact of life, long before a problem in wider society was recognised. It is an interesting part of British history, long obscured by much of the bullshit surrounding drugs. My mum and most of her generation are gone now.

Documentary from 1998...

I don't need a documentary to tell me about the 1990s - i wuz there.

The 1890s, on the other foot, was a time i wish to have seen - We call it 'the Great Binge' but the French have a much more subtle appreciation for that era: La Belle Époque.

(Excuse the American pronunciation; it is hilarious.)

He's right about the starting point, though. It coincided with the inspiration of the Impressionist art movement changing the way Europeans perceived the world around them before affecting the wider cultural world. Cocaine in soft drinks - Coca-Cola didn't stop putting that in the ingredients until 1929 - Heroin in cough sweets - cannabis resin imported from India where bureaucrats used it to ease the boredom of endless pen pushing on behalf of an ungrateful population and soldiers toked up to relieve the boredom of keeping watch on the natives along the Khyber Pass - a natural trade route between Afghanistan and the Indian markets where they found a wider trade in Europe.

I've read the 1890 report on the cannabis trade, drafted in India, who recommended the trade remain uninterrupted as it was a good source of regular tax revenue. The Opium Wars with China during the 1840s were fresh in the memory, so the narcotics were seen as a way to bring in more money to feed the Imperial money machine.

It all started to unravel around 1910 when the Americans took exception to Mexican cotton pickers taking what they called 'marijuana' and sloping off work in the afternoon sun to enjoy a siesta...

They convince themselves it helps calm them down. For some maybe it does. It can also cause the opposite for some, including paranoia.

It is quite common to smell weed in the towns and cities of England, more and more people smoke it openly. I assume they do not fear prosecution because the police/CPS policy seems to be no prosecution if it involves small amounts for personal use.

they might have a lot of it in a rucksack which seems to be the carrier of choice
