You forget that Mottie hates, hates, HATES the EU, and is quite prepared for the country to suffer immense damage for ever in order to be "free".

£10B a year in administrative costs, companies going bankrupt, people losing their jobs, their homes, these are all mere trivialities to him.

In fact - he actively wants them, to prove how "free" we now are:

At the time, nobody who knew the slightest about reality, or bothered to do the most trivial amount of checking, would not have known that.
