The beeb are about to get a massive lifeline from Labour. Apparently, rather than make them address falling demand for their service they are thinking of scrapping the optional licence fee and making it mandatory via general tax.

Nice free ride

Would you prefer to have a nationwide broadcast system totally based on advertising revenue and run by those who choose what you should believe?

You may think otherwise, but the BBC is seen around the world as one of the most unbiased source of news...

And the quality of their program output is in many cases unrivaled...

If you want to experience the opposite, see what the US has to offer!

The bbc do a lot more than news and the number of people opting out their content or funding them is increasing.

Moving to a national funding model removes consumer choice.

It also gives them unfair competitive advantage over the independents

I think ditching the licence fee and moving to general taxation is now the most sensible option. France did it a couple of years ago. Other countries spend similar amounts on public broadcasting, but none has the worldwide reputation of the BBC.

I have lived happily without consuming their Licensable content for the last 5 years. I only took that option because I moved in to a new house I was renovating (without a TV) and got lots of nasty letters from them about buying a licence.

I'd support splitting them off in to a core service - News + Radio and a subscription service - all the cr@p content they produce.

I'll happily get rid of the TV and watch everything else on a different device. I do sometimes listen to their true crime podcasts and watch some of their dramas. I've pretty much stopped consuming anything else from them. I can happily live without both if that is the way in which they want to play the game.

Interesting non fact there......

The truth...

The BBC will not be funded from general taxation if the TV licence fee is abolished, the culture secretary has said.
Lisa Nandy told BBC Breakfast the licence fee was "deeply regressive" and that she was thinking "quite radically and creatively" about alternatives.
However, they do not include using money from general taxes to fund the BBC, because that could open up the broadcaster to interference from politicians who would hold the purse strings, she said.
Nandy did not rule out a subscription model for the BBC, but said there was "a whole range" of other possible options.
She said the government was "determined to grip this, and I think there is a genuine sense out there in the public that the licence fee was built for a different era".
Nandy has started negotiations with the BBC about the corporation's funding after its current royal charter expires in 2027.

The important bit ..

You might think what they produce is carp, but others disagree...

And making the BBC a 'core service' is missing the point...

The BBC caters for all, not just the easily led commercially challenged 'audience'!

And the BBC have always been innovators, whether it be in technology or promoting minority interests...

So I ask you this as an example...

Given the state of women's sport attendance figures a decade ago, why are stadiums now selling out?

I'll answer that for you...

It's because the BBC decided to give similar coverage to women's competitions as they do to men's...

And it was the same with diversity sport, which commercial companies have now finally cottoned onto...

Because they saw an opportunity created by the BBC...

You'll only miss it when we all lose it!

thats different from the discussion on radio 4 last night, the presenters were discussing "mutualisation". as a model and claimed it had support

The argument was that it was no different than being eligible to vote. The cost of running elections is shared by everyone even if you don't vote

Now I'd say the Licence fee is a subscription service but with another name (from a different time). Just how much do you pay for the 'Free to Air' channels (those that solely supported by advertising) via what you buy that is advertised?
If you are a 'Sky' (or Pluto or Paramount) subscriber you pay a subscription to also have adverts which are paid for by the product manufacturers.

Doesn't the Beeb do a good job on what it actually receives in comparison to the channels that are funded by advertising. I appreciate that some people regard it as biased (either Left or Right depending on their POV) but I think it pretty balanced in its news reporting on the whole. I also say it is noticeable that its programme output is reducing - many of the entertainment programmed it does from its own funding are reducing in number and other programmes that it originally bought in or started via another production company are now broadcast by other companies.

and you are happy to pay for it, like I do for my Netflix subscription.

I don't miss it because I terminated my subscription 5 years ago.

At the price the licence fee is a bargain for the wide range of services it provides...

Netflix is full of carp...

As are most of the other advert led subscriber offerings!

And do you only watch non live TV on said carp channel?
