Cutting out/down on the Drink.

It depends for what reasons you are giving up, as to how easy it is. I had drunk the equivalent of 16 pints a week, from age 18 - 40. 2 christmases ago I had bought in a load of sherry, ale etc, because I could. I didn't really know what to drink, so just tried a bit of each but still could not be bothered. New Years Day I felt rubbish and had really had enough of being a problem drinker, so I quit.

2.5 years on and I don't miss it one bit. I have the occasional cocktail on holiday but as soon as I start to feel a bit merry, I stop. And it's easy.

It's clear to me now that I was only drinking out of habit, as I thought it was a treat and a way to relax. Also I was drinking before I went out to calm my social anxiety. Since then I've thought "if I don't like pubs/clubs anymore then why am I even going out?" so I've stopped going out. I'd much prefer to do some DIY, play some guitar or watch a good series on the telly rather than getting drunk and chatting to randoms.

On the other hand, when my ex was trying to tell me to stop drinking then it only made me drink more, and in secret

My wife was hiding bottles of Vodka from me to stop me drinking so much, I started doing the same. I kept finding the ones she had hidden and replaced them with mine.
