Face mask information.

The government is all over the place when it comes to the wearing of face masks.
You need a mask to pop into a shop for a pint of milk but you can sit in a pub or go to the gym all day without one.

So walking into Tescos is now higher risk than sitting in Wetherspoons or pumping iron in a sweaty gym.

If, as has been said, wearing a mask does not restrict oxygen intake and levels, why should they not be required in the gym?

For all those who think that wearing a mask lowers your oxygen level, check out this video

spoiler alert:

wearing a mask doesn't lower your oxygen levels

To be fair he's hardly doing anything to raise his o2 demand. I suspect someone doing a Vo2Max test would fair differently in performance terms. secondly, its not about o2 blood sat its the effort required to meet o2 demand. Reduced o2 sat is more about CV performance. Surely you can consider activity that would make face covering a challenge.

When I used to do martial arts, simply wearing a gum shield massively inhibited air intake to meet demand.

Our gov is atrocious, that is about the only clear thing at the mo!

At least going to tesco isn't much of a work out...

I think gov had 2 problems - not being able to easily get enough themselves and egg on face forgetting about the infected spreading it - how and where and thinking just about protection. They now seem to accept that people without symptoms can infect others as well.

The 3 layer masks do offer some protection from getting infected but need washing or changing regularly. If some one is infected and wears one that's not a problem but it is if some one else uses it. My wife has been hand washing her high level protection one - rinse and wring out etc in soapy water. Gets around the smell building up. The 3 layer ones should be a lot easier to do.

;) I'm still inclined to think a blast in the microwave would kill of the virus as they need their tiny quantity of water to survive. Could probably be used to dry a mask as well.

That cannot be so as it can 'survive' on surfaces for days.

Might be that the virus contains a tiny amount of water inside its lipid envelope?
This lipid envelope might be it can remain viable for hours or days on some surfaces, but is broken down rapidly by strong alcohol or soap (leaving the RNA within unprotected)?

Ultraviolet light is used to kill virus's in hospitals.
Donald Trump wondered if UV light could be used to treat coronavirus internally.
Somehow i don't think shinning a UV torch down someones throat would be advisable.

Presumably it would.

I did manage to find that a virus needs it's tiny drop of water. Their greasy aspect that we wash off probably retains it.

The recent meat factory infections suggest I was correct in telling my wife to be careful about chilled stuff in super markets.

Yes, I yearn for the day when Coronavirus is eradicated, and I can go back to licking my fingers after buying my chicken and beef mince without fear of ill - effects....

Just out of interest, been shopping this morning, about 4th time only since mid-March, but BBQing tomorrow so needs must.
Supermarche was very busy, large car park almost full, in fact extremely busy for a Saturday lunchtime.
Counted about ten people without masks, and only then because I was looking carefully and counting.
Masks in France seem to be becoming a fashion trend.
Me? I was wearing a Le Mans 24 hour mask, the most comfortable one yet.

Masks may well be here for a long time, so may as well join the trend.

Can you get respirators over there? I've ordered some FFP3s but the delivery date continues to be put back.

No idea, I don't know what they are.
If I put "FFP3 for sale" into google, all the responses are for UK sites. So I would imagine it's a UK classification or specification.
Obviously the sheds and merchants here sell face masks, but I've not looked at the spec's.
