fines for middle lane hogging

absolutely not a limit is just that a limit and safer driving could be anywhere slower than that at times. In fog or heavy rain or high winds or icy and snowy conditions.

Took my family on holiday once and was caught in a torrential downpour causing flash flooding. The wipers were barely clearing the windscreen and there was a great danger of aquaplaning so I slowed down to 40mph in the inside lane and was disgusted to be overtaken by HGVs still driving to their max limited 60mph.

Same with fog. I slow down way under the limit while others continue to blast past at stupid speeds.

Safe driving isn't all about speed its all about appropriate speed and awareness.

genius

I was wondering how much carnage you've caused on the motorways Joe, you realize that if you're doing a steady 70mph as indicated by your speedo you are in actual fact probably doing 65 as manufacturers err on the side of caution, the guy behind you is ever so slowly creeping up on you, his speedo is also reading 70, he eases off, this causes the guy behind him to brake a bit, so he's down to 63 and like a chain reaction everyone else has to brake, each one a little harder than the one in front, half a mile back they're at a standstill, even the young girl who only passed her test a week previous, she's at a standstill as she didn't even see it coming, her blood smeared all over the smashed windscreen, good one Joe, ACCIDENTS DON'T HAPPEN, THEY ARE CAUSED!

Don't be silly. I know the accuracy of my speedo and that if I drive at about 75mph on the dial I'll be doing 70mph on the road. I'm almost always in a convoy of other cars doing the same speed. It's just idiots that want me to move aside to let them speed in the middle lane whilst HOGGING it. It ain't gonna happen mate. Get over it. Nothing has changed other than you'll get a ticket for tailgating.

So you know the accuracy of your speedo Joe, I think you should get a job with a large haulage company, you could save them thousands getting the tachos calibrated every six months, and manufacturers vary, a few years ago I went to Donnington with three mates on different makes of bikes, me leading on an Aprilia which like the Ducati the speedo is the most accurate (its an Italian thing) I plodded along at a steady 90 my mates on various Jap bikes were clocking between 110 and 120.

Congratulation Itshere, you have won the argument, how do I know you ask? Simple Joe can't answer anymore, he just keeps frothing at the mouth and blethering the same thing over and over, perhaps he suffers from altzheimers.

The argument was won as soon as middle lane hogging was made illegal. Everything else has just been crying over spilt milk. :)

There was never an argument and nothing will change. Get over it mate.

There will be more accidents unfortunately, I avoided two on a 90 mile journey where a couple of drivers did not observe at what speed i was approaching them through the middle lane and was in the process of passing them, but they suddenly pulled out to overtake a slow moving truck at the last minute.

Now normally if they were closing on to a slow moving truck in front of their car, at a greater rate, then i would know that sooner or later they would need to pull out to overtake and I could easily move over to 3rd lane to make way for them, but they were showing no intention to pull out to overtake but were rather maintaining a steady gap, so I assumed they had no intention of overtaking the lorry doing about 60, but then suddenly they indicated and pulled out without properly observing that I was approaching them quite rapidly, in which case they should have allowed my to pass first and not forced me to change my lane.

What if I was not able to change my lane safely due to other traffic in lane 3, then it would have left me with no option other than to brake violently.

so take my words, the problem of middle lane hoggers has simply been converted into unsafe overtaking, many overtaking driver are not able to judge how fast the following traffic is approaching them in lane 2.

You must have been speeding then eh? Norty boy.

No I am of an age where speed doesn't help me to get there any faster.

All the more reason to move over and let me through!

Amazingly, the new rules have not reached many motorist yet, not only that but I saw so many still hogging middle lanes when i could see the lane 1 being totally clear of any traffic for miles upon miles!

I use ALL three lanes Joe all three I have even done over the speed limit on the GASP !!! 'slow lane'.

I even use YOUR lane when you aren't looking....my bad :D

Asperger syndrome, I’ve said it before.

What kind of person does over 9 posts a day, every day, since November 2005 on a forum? Answer = A nut!

As of 9th July 2013

27,035 posts divided by 2,811 days = 9.6 posts per day.

(And that's just this forum. What others does he infect?)

Nine one liners a day? Only forum I belong to? Don't watch TV? I must post more.

Bumping an old thread but,

Has the much vaunted "middle lane hoggers to be prosecuted" campaign of a couple of years ago made any difference at all?
IME, none whatsoever. So, did it really happen at all?

Perfectly true. I see it all the time and the inside lane completely empty.

It's surprising really as, although police numbers have been cut (at a time when we are being invaded!) there still appears to be enough police to catch speeders and parking contraventions - with the aid of a multitude of cameras, of course.

Mind you, the government are particularly good at passing laws that cannot be enforced.

Was at a CPD event in the Summer at a local hotel. Down the corridor the naughty boys and girls were queuing up for the speed courses. I was amazed to see there was a 'middle lane' room. So, apparently, you can elect to do a course instead of taking the points.

I see this every morning travelling between Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.
All the cars and vans get in the outside lane and most of the lorries remain in the inside lane. I travel behind a lorry doing 56-60 mph and am nice and relaxed. Those travelling in the outside lane are doing 60-65 but are using their brakes so often it is like they are signalling morse code to the guys behind! Result is that most mornings I actually manage to pass someone on the inside lane who overtook me 3 miles previously and is now sitting on the tail pipe of the guy in front.

And before anyone says it, you are allowed to pass on the left if traffic is moving in queues and those to the right are moving slower. I have even done this with a police car behind me and was not pulled over. It only becomes illegal when you pass someone on the left with the clear intention of pulling back over to the right in front of them.
