Island worktop size

If you've got units one side, and a breakfast bar the other, then the units will be okay, but the breakfast bars going to need supporting on a leg somewhere, and that'll concentrate the weight in one spot. And the installers legs will buckle a little bit as well.

It wont need a visible supporting leg depending on the materials used. My quartz top was fine, you could stand on it. If you want a slim top then it might. The units will need reinforcing though and extra legs under and on the back. I used stud wood to add extra legs and strengthen the units. My kitchen included extra side and back panels, so it was effectively doubled in strength. There are plenty of good youtube vids on how to do it. Its one of the reasons I installed the 4 rounded posts on the corners. I'd also install power sockets under the bar end. I've go two doubles with USB and one on the far end.

Am I right in thinking that if I'm only having drawers in the island then I won't be able to have sockets at each of the short ends because there is no cavity to install the back box into unlike cupboards?

its a Hikvision 4Mp PoE dome camera (ceiling mounted), connects via cat 6 to my NAS server. Its always on, but the server stores based on movement/time of day etc.

Did you phone your wife and ask her to have a quick cleanup before you screen shotted it? ;)

How do you find the hob works out in the island? Is the breakfast bar a nice place to sit when the pans are simmering, oil splatters etc? I've sort of talked myself out of one for those reasons. Do you tend to do one or the other at the island (prep+socialise vs. actual cooking )?

You only need around 25mm back box for a standard socket or 35 for flush, the side panel will be 18mm plus a decorative panel is another 18, so you already have the space needed as long as you can fix it securely and chase the cable into a routed slot if necessary.

So no dedicated recording box needed with that (just been looking at packages on ebay)- is the in-camera software good enough to start recording/taking stills when motion is detected, and just dump them on a file/ftp server? Is the lens angle adjustable?

I tend to put a lid on the pan. I find the induction hob heats the pan quicker. As i'm the main cook, it's nice to be part of the family while cooking.

in general i'm not really a fan of open plan living, but the house has other downstairs rooms too.

No I use synology surveillance station which comes with the nas. We have 2 NAS boxes so 2 cams on each avoids extra licenses.

Does it record sound too?
Your mention of Surveillance Station got my curious, what is the reason for using this when Hikvision have their own recording hub? I think googled it and came across this video in the link below.

Is is simply because you can use different IP cameras with the NAS and also the functionality of the server is better? How much does it cost and what model?

We are at risk of derailing the OPs kitchen island thread. perhaps a new thread in the alarm and cctv section? I only used it to show my island

Edit : duh it's your thread. :)

Wouldn't mind hearing your response on here though since the topic started. :)
