This appalling lack of protection for whistle-blowers — often amounting to persecution — has become commonplace throughout the public services and creates a climate in which dishonesty and malpractice flourish.

The French police will bring tear gas out. Best option in some cases.

Police forces contain a lot of people. Some will be corrupt in all countries. The UK wont be worse than others. No reason why they should be.

UK Police have been known to use batons and even horse charges - take a look at what went on during Thatcher's time. Truncheon's aren't a good idea as hit some one in the wrong place and they are dead - best place is on the collar bone as it will break it. Baton's have killed a few so best not used on peoples heads. One guy was accused of having too thin a skull - after he was dead.

The thing that gets me about this one is people. I asked my son what he would do if he went to a peaceful protest and it started going the way this one did. Answer same as me - clear off quickly. Instead the lemmings come forth. Some might hear about what's going on and go take a look or even join in.

Will UK send them straight back to the country they've escaped from? To endure the very treatment that they escaped from?
Or will they be imprisoned on a prison ship?

The system needs an overhaul, but it's not the refugees fault that it isn't working.

Last year, almost 30,000 people sought asylum in the UK - and more than 8,000 of them crossed the English Channel in small boats, with the help of people smugglers.

The Home Office says the system is "collapsing" under the weight of illegal entries - but the current rate of arrivals to the UK is a third of the all-time record and well below the numbers in some European Union neighbours.

At the same time, the backlogs of people waiting for a decision on their application had risen to eight times higher than a decade ago, even before the pandemic made matters worse.

It's those figures that lead critics say the real problem is years of mismanagement.

Perfectly safe. I feel far safer in France than in UK.
The migrants didn't escape from France, they travelled through France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, etc to reach UK.
And the UK can't send them back to those countries because the UK decided it didn't want to be in that club anymore.
So now they'll have to find out where the refugees escaped from, and send them back to that country, and the treatment that they escaped from.
