most expensive thing you own which isnt a house or a car?

My workshop and it's contents I suppose. After my wife of course. ;-)

Years & years ago in the mid 80's, Dorks bestest ever mate went to work in Hong Kong for a few months & bought him back a genuine fake Rolex.

An almost perfect copy of a day date oyster perpetual with a fake 22ct gold plated bezel.

I wore it almost every day for a few years & eventually it needed a new battery, so we both popped into Derby's only 'Rolex' dealer of that time.

I remember it like it was yesterday, the little bloke behind the counter took a 1sec look at it & told me "you do know it's a fake don't you"?

Then he did something quite remarkable, he pressed the button that locked down the shop, reached under his counter & brought out my watch's genuine counterpart. The very moment that £48k watch wrapped itself around my wrist I knew that one day I would have one.

I never did buy one, but a special shopping expedition isn't complete if Dork doesn't get to pop into the local 'Rolex' dealer & try on a genuine Rolex.

I wish I had enough money to buy a Rolex watch, because I'd spend it on something else!

Probably the puppy I just bought. My sofa was £200 more, but puppy is speeding up its depreciation.
Probably my mobile phone. You forget how expensive they are.

I've never spent more than £150 on a phone. The Moto G range does everything a £1000 iPhone does. People spend so much on phones and rarely actually need that tech.

Lol, you think it does, that's like saying a Fiat Panda does everything a Ferrari does.

OK, an iPhone might have more pixels, a bit more memory etc. But really, I've never seen a person with an iPhone do anything that my phone could not. I had this discussion with a young work colleague years ago, who had bought the latest iPhone for about £700. Her first question was "well, does you phone have Instagram, because I'm pretty sure you can only get that on an iPhone!". Um, yeah. It's an app, it's not Apple!

As for Pandas and Ferrari's - they look and sound very different. An iphone and a Moto don't look all that different really. Black rectangles with shiny screens, that's all.

No you're completely wrong, the two phones may well 'do the same things' ie ability to take a photo, run various apps, pay at a till or whatever but typically a more expensive one will do it better and smoother and quicker and is a more pleasant experience to use. The same argument can easily be made for virtually anything, a laptop, a car, food, I could go on, for sure if these subtle differences do not matter to you or you have a lower budget then a lessor quality product may be perfectly acceptable. Your work colleague sounds as thick as two short planks and citing that two phones may look alike are poor example of your justification.

I didn't say it was not "better", only that it could do the same things.
Most people don't even realise how the more expensive phones are better and don't make any use of those features at all.
For most, iPhones are nothing but a status symbol, for some, they have just been sold the idea that they are the only phones worth having.

My point is, for most people, they are a complete waste of money. Much like Ferraris.
