It stands to reason that life expectancy tails off. It must be exponentially harder to add a year to a population dying at 80, than 70.

Not really, through advances we've made good progress in keeping people alive beyond your 3 score and 10, but little progress in keeping people in a fit active state beyond 70, just a chemically corrected coffin doging state.

it doesn’t seem like it will change much in the next 50 years. Yet in just 20 years. 60 will be the new 40.
