Apparently the word she is accused of saying is sp@stic, and it it is now a criminal offence to write the word on the Internet or say it out loud, punishable by burning at the stake. Unbelievable. We used to call each other that name at school; can I and my schoolmates be done for historic malicious communications I wonder? It's still a medical term for pity's sake - one can have a sp@stic colon. Ian Dury made a career of parodying his disability using the word.

We did a charity event at school and donated proceeds to... the Spastics Society. Now you get arrested if you say the word.

The way I see it is like this.

Every one has a right to free speech.

But there are certain things you can't say.

You can't swear in public (b0llocks excepted)*. You cant use racial slurs. You cant threaten violence or incite a riot. And you can't use words like that which KH did.

I find words like that offensive. I have Cerebral Palsy. I don't want any sympathy, but all my life (as a child and an adult, albeit less so now) I've been shouted at, abused and sometimes even beaten for being disabled. For being different.

Why people feel the need to do that, IDK. But they do.



*A record shop owner was taken to court because he put The Sex Pistols album "Never mind the b0llocks" in his shop window but the judge ruled it was not an offensive word.
But be warned. It hasn't stopped police trying and in some cases succeeding to arrest people for saying or displaying the word since, despite the ruling.

Using the flimsiest defence that the word referred to a 19th century slang term for a priest.
