fines for middle lane hogging

Dont you just love the cars that come up your inside when you are in a long queue on the outside lane (caused by a middle lane hogger) and then they indicate twice and pull in front of you with a space of about 10ft at 60mph...

Would see all of them banned for life. Its muppetry like that which causes the mexican waves where suddenly you end up with stationary traffic on the outside lane.

What is the most dangerous speed on a motorway? Ironically 0mph unless you like being a bumpstop for a HGV.

I haven't read any of what's been said already so will probably be repeating most of it, however, it's the best law in a long time, the middle and outer lanes ARE FOR OVERTAKING! in Germany, before you can take your test you must do, among other things, X amount of hours motorway driving, here in the UK you can pass your test in a small sleepy suburb and be on the motorway within a few minutes surrounded by all manner of vehicles with no idea whatsoever! I'm amazed there are not more accidents.

Well if the middle lane is doing 70mph - then what is the outside lane doing? Let's turn it into a vegetable plot.

Donlt you know, the outside lane is the BMW lane. Haven't you noticed if you go there at less than 90mph you will have a BMW about 5 metres behind you testing his lights within half a minute.

Well read it before talking bolex.

It's all here isn't it. You all thought those dick heads cruising down the middle lane at 70mph were just simpletons who'd forgotten the basics of driving. But now you know they are actually doing it deliberately - actual on purpose! - and what's more they think they are right.

Try reading the highway code before you comment please.

Brilliant idea. Anyone who hogs the middle lane where there is an empty road on their left wants shooting. I haven't read through all the pages but if anyone has named the overtaking lane 'the fast lane' then you also want shooting.

Hogging aside I'm surprised nobody has mentioned another change that was talked about in the same releases. Namely that the fine for driving without insurance is to be raised to £200. That still makes it cheaper than most people's (and teenagers especially) actual car insurance.

Only problem is you can't drive too far before an ANPR camera reads your number plate and your car is promptly destroyed.

There is also an automatic fine for not having a valid insurance on any car unless it is SORN'd off. so you get an automatic fine regardless of you driving or not.

Yes, I thought that when I heard the report, although I thought it was £300. Still not enough.

Driving without insurance is something that people do intentionally. They can't 'forget' to get insurance; they do it on purpose to save themselves money. Many new drivers don't take out insurance because it can cost literally thousands, so I can understand (but not condone) taking the risk of being fined £300 instead.

Just get a set of Polish plates and you go off the radar and do whatever you like.

So from July this year, most of us will start suffering from pain in the neck as we look up in the mirror, taking our attention away from the road ahead, and then twist our neck to the right to see around the blind spot, before pulling out to overtake a slower vehicle in the lane 1 and then still possibly miss another driver who is changing from lane 3 to lane 2 and there you go bang!

I think the new law lacks any thoughts on safety, I hate middle lane hoggers just as much as any good driver does, but that doesn't mean those driving responsibly in middle lane are now breaking the law by staying in the middle lane when it is not hurting anyone, or slowing any one down, or holding up following traffic. regardless of lane 1 being empty or not, primarily during the daylight hours but....

However, at night, things can be the other way around, at night traffic is usually milder, so one can stay in lane1 for a lot longer before needing to pull out to overtake, most trucks these days don't drive any less than 70mph, but there is a definite advantage over safety at night as one does not have to overtake a middle lane hogger virtually blindly as lane 3 is far more dangerous at night for overtaking due to oncoming traffic headlights., and in particularly when it is raining as well.

I can't see it ever becoming law. You'll have nervous drivers jumping into the gap left for stopping by trucks in the slow lane and getting shunted all over the place. Crazy man.

Hey, didn't the highway code also says when it comes to 3 lane traffic, lane left is for people joining and leaving the highway, and for slower traffic in general, Middle lane is for ahead only, and right lane is for turning right except in the case of Motorways it is for overtaking middle lane traffic and for other fast Emergency vehicles such as Police and Ambulances.

As a matter of fact, most drivers hog the lane 3! that is where the new law should target motorist driving constantly in lane 3. This lane 3 should be only used for overtaking only, but people tend to stay in this lane because other two lanes are slower or have slower moving traffic.

It is not a rule that all traffic should drive at 70mph, the speed of traffic depends on the prevailing traffic and weather conditions.

It may be a good idea now a days to install a onboard video camera, so that your journey is recorded and you could use the evidence to defend yourself against a corrupt officer who doesn't like your face and wants to issue you a FPN.

The onboard camera could prove that you were unable to rejoin lane 1 or you would end up tail gating the car in lane 1.
