I think this deserves its own thread

Felt like a real beer last night. Things have been getting me down lately.

However im sometimes of the thinking 1 beer in nice surrounds like a sunny garden or a pub can be enough to unwind me so I can set off again.

The thing is I know this to be true with me.

However Ive found it easy coming off the drink. Every now and then Ill get a moment when I really want one.

But what does one lead to?

I am on holiday and I took a week off work to sort out my life away from drink and stress, it's funny but I keep finding myself in pubs more than if I were at home. The big difference though is that I am drinking less and enjoying a drink as a treat rather than a crutch. The problem with drinking is that it is so easy to slip another one in and then just another. I think I may have had a drink problem without actually realising it, now that I accept that I may have had one it is easier to control. I don't feel I am missing out by not drinking and like today, I am going for a run and doing some hill walking, after which I may have a cider in the pub but that will be it. So yes you can have a drink or two like anyone and control the amount you have.

Adrian Chiles 2018 BBC Two documentary, Drinkers Like Me.
I remember him saying the first pint is amazing. Then every other one is not as good but you keep trying to get the feeling of the first. So true...

It's just not the same as you get older.
2 is my limit now over 3 hours and I'm starting to think it's not worth it. I'm only there for the chat with old friends.
I go weeks without any alcohol these days.

Interesting....

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption that does not affect health.

As part of an effort to lose weight I virtually cut out alcohol, I have had one pint this year.
Well done...

I gave up in January and it has helped my shape.

Like the Highway man I had had few few in holiday.

The England Ghana game I had 4. I didn't function to well next day.

I need to have a think can I have the odd one to wind down?

That odd one in a monday after work can then lead to 3 on a Friday night after work.

Its not necessary that the one on the monday will lead to 2 or 3. Its the one that opens the door for the rest of the week.

We went on a cruise in April that was all inclusive including booze. We paid extra to go 'premium all inclusive' which was basically better brands, canned/bottled mixers instead of out of the pump and premium coffee's and teas from the speciality coffee house. I drank far more than I would normally - sort of felt I had to - trying out premium gins, brandies and scotch. I’ve never drank so much in a week and I don’t think it did me any good. Going on another cruise in September, not an all inclusive booze one this time so I’ll forgo any drinks packages and we'll be pay as you go on that one! I do enjoy a glass of wine or two with my meals but I'm not one for drinking in the day, especially on its own.

Be interested to see how that goes as we cruise regular (as guests) and we always have the drinks package, the package usually costs us around a £90 per day and we wondered if it worked out better to PAYG.

You must stagger off that ship! On P&O the premium drinks package is £60pp per night and you have to book for the whole cruise duration and for everyone in the cabin. Marella was all inclusive and only £13 a day extra to upgrade to 'Premium all inclusive'. We're getting a £320 cabin credit with P&O which should be more than enough for what we would normally spend on booze in a week.

We always use Princess cruises so a bit more expensive on the drinks packages, there are other things rolled into the drinks package such as WiFi, speciality coffees etc. but for an average 15 day cruise the drinks are around £1200. We were discussing not doing the drinks package in March. Because we always get an executive suite onboard, the Wifi is in anyway plus other perks which makes the drinks package less attractive. The onboard spend is good at £320. We had that only once.

I used to drink a lot several years ago.....I went through a REALLY bad time just after my divorce where I ended up twice in the police cells in the space of 7 days!!! Police came looking for me as I was threatening to do myself in!!!

Now, I still have a bottle or 3 of wine but only when visiting my brother in Devon. And even then, it's watered down with lemonade!!

I do have the occasional bottle here in my tiny room but try not to go over that because with my depression it can make things go really bad quickly...
