There are many no-go areas in Britain and this is due to the failure of policing. No-go for decent people that is. Who in their right mind would walk around the centre of Manchester, for example, after the hours of darkness? Or for that matter, certain areas in daylight hours? What goes on in the streets around Strangeways prison is scandalous. The police have the occasional crackdown but they are ineffective. It is certainly a no-go area for women, white or black.

The Mail should not have apologised and should perhaps run a feature on Great Ducie Street.
