Linky you are uneployable, that's the main reason you are self-employed. Given the choice a time-served guy will always be employed before a CC/CCC. Sorry, but that's a fact.

As for apprentices & mobiles. Simple, do as we do ban them. Tell them if they're caught with one It will be smashed with a hammer in front of them!! FFS they're kids!! Don't treat them like adults.

No Delta the main reason that I am self employed , as already stated, is because of circumstances at home.I need to be around when I am needed, not when my contracted working hours dictate!

End of discussion!

I have to agree with delta again, if you dont have full Nvqs in plumbing or gas the big companys wont even look at you. these 5k courses only supply you with a "technical nvq city & guilds" tickets.

I hate the way they make out youll be fully qualified. I also agree with delta there are too many CC & CCCs unemployable

It does make me laugh, twenty years ago you couldent give plumbing apprenticeships away, it was seen as manual work and very few were interested, then along comes the media with "plumbers on £100,00 a year" and suddenly everybodys dreaming of becoming a plumber, its not the money of course, they have always wanted to unblock other peoples toilets, you couldent make it up.

You can learn more about Plumbing from a DIY book than on any of these Mickey Mouse courses!!

I guess I'd also be a bit pizzed if I spent £6K+ on one and now sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring - like most CC/CCCs now are!!............

What about the school leavers?

Granted, these kids are just that, kids. But if you take on a CC/CCC with all their 'baggage', they're a complete pain in the arze.

Give em two days & they'll be trying tell the boss what to do. When the plain fact is; they have failed in any other career, but yet they'll be great Plumbers??!!! Don't think so!!

Failures & losers.

What is it with you? Why will they all be failures? Some may fail but they won't all fail, if they want it bad enough they will find a way.
I reckon you feel threatened by the youngsters coming up to take your place, why be so negative? Who do you think is going to take the place of the likes of you when you hang up your pipe bender, the younger guys thats who, granted, some of the young uns, havent got a good work ethic but some have, and the ones that have will get where they want to get.

To the OP, I went into gas just over 11 years ago when the ACS first came out, I already did a lot of basic plumbing having a construction background but decided to go back to college to get the 'papers' with a view to specialising in plumbing and gas, I had a lot of people say to me ' why bother? no one will take you on with no gas experience' ...just made me more determined and 3 years later I had done all my plumbing plus level 3, plus gas, 4 appliances, all done in Coventry technical college and y'know what, within a week of me getting my final gas quals I was taken on by a building / maintenance company with their own gas section, they put me on a reduced rate for a couple of months while I shadowed one of their guys on mainly servicing and breakdowns and within 3 weeks the manager put me up to full rate so they were obviously pleased with my work.
Like Chrisr says...it was a bit easier to go it alone in the early days than it is now but I didnt let anyone put me off, 11 years later I live in South Wales, run my own business, only one man band but thats the way I like it, not going to become a millionaire but I make a living and thats the main thing, also did all my oil traing and assessments seeing as I live semi rural, got a good loyal customer base now and dont often have a day off work unless I choose to, so..don't let the likes of Delta whatever his name is put you off, if you want to do it, go for it...good luck mate. :) ps I was in my late 30's when I started training, knocking on 50 now...

I think your missing the point mate, what delta is trying to say is, what is the point trying to come into the gas industry at the moment because everyone else has the same plan " i know ill be a gas fitter$$$$$$"

i think not, delta is giving this man honest good advice at this moment in time. he would be wasting his time.

there all queuing up to be the next 35k plumber

sorry but I do not agree with all you lads saying yeh no problem it will be cushty, when it wont be.

Why do some of you think i just want to do gas because of the money?
Not every one in this world are money hungry.
Yeh it's nice to earn good money but as long as you have enough to get by on i am happy with that.
I enjoy the job, I WILL succeed despite what some of you think.
And i will be a damn good ENGINEER ( oh sorry i'm not allowed to call myself that because i haven't done an NVQ)
Some of you seriously need to get a life haven't you got any mates, don't you go to the pub you sound like women bitching about CC's LOL

THANKS AGAIN TO All OF THE POSITIVE COMMENTS I HAVE RECEIVED MUCH APPRECIATED ADAM

Didnt say no problem and didnt say it'll be cushty, it'll obviously be hard graft, but then most things are if you want to get anywhere, and what would you suggest he trains in? all trades and jobs are suffering at the moment so if he's made his mind up he may as well go for something he really wants to do, if everyone was as negative as you lot there wouldnt be any plumbers left once you all retire
  doom and gloom merchants
