It was the fact that they came right up to the edge of the drive exit. They would have driven me nutz.

going to put led rope lights inside the border of the gravel area to highlight the decorative stones. We are now contemplating cobbles instead of chippings. Thoughts?

Yes you are right. I have ripped 3 tyres on them getting on my drive with my Range Rover.

If by cobbles you mean small round stones, they're more prone to move underfoot making them harder to walk on, and you could leave a hollow after each step. Chippings tend to be better in that respect.
