Winter of Discontent (202)2

That would make a good slogan for a bus. Cut it down to three words and even an ADD sufferer like @Mottie would like it.
So, it’s now okay for you to attribute disorders to people you have never met? Doesn’t that break many of the site rules? I’ll report it just in case and I’ll let everyone know how I get on.

Earlier this morning you said that a long informative post was beyond you.

I said nothing of the sort. Are you a qualified medical expert now?

"It’s 3.50am. I got up because I couldn’t sleep. Reading that has done the trick. I'm back off to bed now. Thanks and goodnight".

There are people like motorbiking trying to spread the false rumour that the rail strike is by greedy overpaid train drivers.
Who achieved their amazing salary by not striking for 27 years.
The main problem though is that this area is not what it's all about. A union will always ask for a pay increase over what they expect to get. Add current inflation levels though and ????????

An interesting aspect on the nurses pay rise that has been offered. Worked out by their pay review body, It's based on OBR predictions for inflation next year. That is what has been reported. LOL This years inflation wont have been predicted accurately but screw what that actually is. Just forget it. It seems the bottom grade has been increased a bit more. The gov had budgeted on that so stuff it all.

Lack of docs and nurses. Sunak says not enough training places. There are probably some problems in increasing that but is it the real one. I'd say no. Double the numbers of them and their cost doubles as well. That has to be covered in tax some how or the other, Oh lets make the economy grow. Fine in theory but how long will it take. UK performance in that area hasn't been good for yonks.

The govs spend. The BofE report is very clear about one aspect of that. The number of economically inactive people has increased. Some of that could be down to covid aspect including long term health effects. No one seems sure. A pundit made a comment when NI was increased - people will think it's for the NHS as Sunak said. Probably only part of the story as NI has never covered NHS costs. The vast bulk is taken from general taxation. The pundit knows that.

The UK

Shell Investors Back Headquarters Move to U.K.

  • More than 99% of votes approve Shell’s restructuring plan
  • The step will make share buybacks quicker and lower cost: CFO

And to London of course.
A share repurchase is a transaction whereby a company buys back its own shares from the marketplace.
There has been a lot of that going on within the oil and gas globals.

Nonsense. It costs me more to travel by train than drive to work. I lose money taking the train but sometimes it's more convenient.
Rail travel into cities for work is on the increase and yes it does cost more. Part of that is likely down to too frequent services and low passenger counts as it is with buses. This to increase use :). Being fair coping with peak and averages does have it's problems. I have often wondered how B'ham's ex council bus service did it. I'd suspect overtime plus cleaning and maintenance when they aren't needed. The private company that ran in the area had much longer waiting times during peak hours and don't I know it as I lived just out of B'ham's boundary. In the area where some kids have broken through ice on a lake and died which is actually Kingshurst. B'ham overspill.

These strikes - working conditions and changes to them figure in all of them. While rabid I'm ok Tory supporters come up with all sorts of spout they wouldn't like it either. Some even seem to think they are superior people. These people deserve what they get etc. A sub species effectively. They are narrow minded cretins really with little experience of life other than their own.

You are of course a prime example of the mean average rail traveller.

I can't think of anyone I know who uses rail travel for anything but leisure . . . . . I can imagine rail commuters being upset but who cares? They commute by rail for economic reasons so let them take the hit.
Why should anyone else take a hit for the rail workers.? If they can't get to work and lose pay and can't put food on the table, say, with no strike pay from the RMT's famous War Chest.
Or can't get to their London hospital appointment, and so on... and on
Mick Lynch isn't on strike, so still gets his £84,000.

Nobody is forced to be a low paid "worker".
Yeah! Tell these teachers, train drivers, nurses and care workers to all go and become IT contractors and bankers.
That will solve our problems!

Remember this? We have a government that does not value the arts, even though it is used to keep everybody entertained and off the streets at night. Weird.

I previously said there is justification for low paid workers to get a pay rise. But on arts subsidies..
Do you think people who can't afford to go to the cinema should subsidise others to watch the Ballet? I don't.

If people want the Arts they should pay for them. There is no cultural benefit for the people who's taxes are spent on Arts who don't want to consume and enjoy them.

The National Lottery takes money off the poor

And gave to the Royal Opera House.

People choose if they wish to play the lottery or not.

Of course they do.

And advertising has absolutely no effect, even when it is reinforced with a torrent of mass media hype, aimed at the poor and hopeless and supported by the government.

Do you think people who can't afford to go to the cinema should subsidise others to watch the opera? I don't.
