Hard lockdowns on a small island with an official population of 66 million for months on end was always doomed to failure. Human nature alone is hard to suppress. If the government's stats are to be believed, a different approach is needed. But still they persist.

Sad really that people are flocking to places like the Isle of Wight. The whole purpose of tier 4 is that we stay put to stop it spreading and killing people. Bloody selfish.
It seems that still very few people appreciate how horrible this virus is.

The problem is now is that everyone has got contempt for what they say, and where-as the situation a few days ago was have Christmas but take care around granny, which folk thought sounded sensible, most are now thinking "Sod it, I've had enough of it all"

Its not like lockdowns have much more than an minor effect anyway.... viruses spread until a certain minimum percentage of susceptible is reached and then the outbreak shrinks and its all subject to seasonsonality as well. Most of us won't suffer too bad with the virus, its the older folk that will, thankfully normally, they are at much lower risk of catching it.... they don't tend to go to night clubs, and the like, etc. Its alright saying lockdown to protect the older generation, but that simply narrows the gap a little in how likely people are too spread it, the older folk arnt affected much, the supermarket is still open, DIY stores, etc. The younger folk are more affected by the lcokdown, with social venues closed, now the virus is going to still spread to the same percentage of the population untill immunity is reached, its just now we have moved from the group thats going to be infected from being heavily biased towards those that are going to be less badly ill, to towards it being a more even cross section, now I know we strive for equality these days but this is not what anyone wants.

Think of how many precutions could have been put in place at care homes for all the furlough that was paid out, but no they discharged folk who they didnt know whether were infected or not back into care homes...

True, but stats imply that around 1 in 10 have long term repercussions, including people who don't have significant symptoms. Chronic Fatigue, heart damage and auto immune conditions have been mentioned. That's still most people (9 in 10) not suffering too bad, but it's not good.

The old saw that 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' is very very wrong here.

One of our friends that were not taking a blind bit of notice of it has heard this morning that one of her friends had tested positive for Covid. She was supposed to be coming round to her house to cut her partner and his sons hair on Monday. I bet she still won’t learn from it though.

Quite right. Our friend referred to above had also booked the Isle of Wight for the New Year. The Hotel phoned them up a week ago and said that because they were coming from a Tier 3 area, they were cancelling their booking. Our friend tried pleading with them but the hotel stood firm. (y)

They aren't doomed to failure, they are doing what is needed.
Your are setting up a strawman argument.

Lockdowns, esp partial ones won't eradicate the virus.

This is about damping down to stop virus raging and overwhelming hospitals.

There are now 60 NHS long Covid clinics set up, because people are suffering serious long term effects.

I heard a GP on radio yesterdayhe hasn't worked since he had Covid. he has impaired lung function, heart problems and reduced cognitive function. Life changing damage.
