GB News

Oops...

"GB News, the television channel that launched this week with backing from pro-Brexit tycoons and a mission to produce “anti-woke” US-style news content, is facing an advertiser backlash after big consumer brands including Ikea, Nivea and Grolsch said they would pull their adverts from the network.

Fronted by a clutch of familiar names including the former BBC and Sky presenters Andrew Neil and Kirsty Gallacher, GB News, which launched on Sunday evening, is pitching itself as an alternative to the mainstream media with a focus on generating opinion and controversy, rather than original reporting."

So what were you saying sxturbo?

The brand's have pulled there adverts for spurious reasons, in fact there reasons are that it has been reported as a right wing TV channel, but it was being reported as such before it had even launched, and now within 48 hours where other than shoddy directorship and wooden hosts, they haven't actually done or said anything incorrect or wrong. The lefty newspapers are trying to say it's terrible, but with no actual evidence. It does certainly appear to be a cancel culture vendetta. They are fearful they will have a Twitter campaign against them, but genuinely from what I have seen the reports have been honestly neutral.

But I've only watched it for 2 hours in total.

Personally I don't think it's much different from any other news I've seen.

The only thing the channel has been a little vocal on is the extended lockdown. Which I thought you would have been on board with ellal

This is a great read about all this cancel culture. It's totally pointless other than its aims to divide and conquer ourselves. The rage over the Oxford Grad students was totally fabricated to get attention and it worked.

It's easier now to report on opinions than news as reporting on news requires research, analysis, knowledge whilst reporting on an opinion requires nothing. We now have opinions becoming and shaping the news. That's a dangerous place where we are heading and I see the Government actively encouraging it.

Yeah I agree with what you write to a point, it's a dangerous game, but cancel culture is a very real thing, and there has been plenty of examples of it happening.

What with uncle Ben's and aunt Jemima, and various TV shows etc etc.

Imo uncle Ben's and aunt Jemima weren't racist at all, in fact it was rather the opposite, people weren't not buying the product because they had black people on it.

Same with little Britain and the black face characters, I mean honestly, it is a little barmy.

And it is precisely this that these companies are worried about, so be far there has been no evidence of gbn being right wing. They have been very centre in fact,

I watched the bit about Shamima and 3 of 4 of them thought she deserved to comeback, as opposed to 100% of the audience

Cancel culture is then free speech. If groups get together to make their views know and someone acts on these views then isn't that free speech in action.

If there are activist investors who push for change in a company leading to a change in the board or company strategy - is that cancel culture.

The term is itself loaded.

GB News is not centrist - look its just opinion pieces - we don't need another view on the news- we need the facts reporting not an alternative take on the news.

It's not just the bias in news reporting, but also what actually makes it into the news, that makes news sometimes biased.
For instance, I suspect that many could name a few IRA terrorists, and IRA atrocities.
How many could name Unionist terrorists or Unionist atrocities.
There are many such instances of issues being reported with an unconscious bias because certain facts, names, actions etc are reported while others are simply not reported.

This is the Fox News approach - lets have a debate over an issue. It's easier to bring in talking heads and the public to discuss something than it is to spend an indepth news segment on discovering the real issues and facts.

These debates are just their to push their opinion in a manner that looks like they are considering the other viewpoint - Fox brings on supposed "left leaning viewpoints" to contrast their own.

The truth does not lie somewhere in the middle - it's a dangerouns notion that has been pushed endlessly by the right. You look at the facts not halfway between two opposing viewpoints - this is why so many people are uninformed because instead of encouraging them to seek out facts they just pick one side of the argument / debate.

Does the truth lie between a flat earther and a Scientists? You look at where the overwhelming evidence lies.

yes but the cancel bit comes when the opposing viewpoint is cancelled out,

the cancel culture debate is quite complex, the bbc wrote an interesting article about it.

They tried to cancel out justin bieber for putting his hair in dreadlocks, i think the guy is a knob but at the end of the day the twitter flair up was frankly ridiculous, over a hairstyle as it showed cultural appropriation, what about maybe he thought they looked good and it is a compliment, why only look for negatives in everything people do.

a similar argument can be made against uncle bens etc

have you watched it? it's not exactly divisive, it gives viewpoints from both sides but it can hardly be called divisive.

The fact that certain brands have pulled their advertising is a direct result of cancel culture. There is already a movement to 'cancel' GB news because of a perception that its going to be a right wing UK fox news.

Cancel culture isn't about free speech. Cancel culture is about aggressively shutting down the opposing argument and attempting to remove it entirely from any discussion.

When people stop buying a product- is that cancel culture? That's the free market in operation - we don't hanker for Nokia phones anymore :)

The point is that labelling it cancel culture is then weaponising it like the terms socialism and marxism - before a discussion is started it gets labelled as socialism and the blinkers are on.

Dangerous place we are heading.

They can't, because Unionists don't vote for terrorists.
If they did they would probably get a lot more respect for their democratic rights.

It's the free market. If someone doesnt like your product or where its being advertised and you want those people to buy it - you are not forced into anything.

Cancel culture, socialism, marxims - just terms RW use to stifle debate.

Case in point - Texans don't want regulation of their failing power grid as regulation is socialism.

But hey All Lives Matter including the foetus - but not after its born.

Yet the real issues are drowned out in this ridiculous war.

But people didn't stop buying it that's the point, the majority of consumer still bought it.

Statues is another case in point...
