Replacing 15mm copper CH system with 10mm PB barrier pipe. Is this the done thing now?

Got a CH leak somewhere under the floor of a studio flat (boiler is losing pressure, but holds when CH flow and return are isolated). It's currently 15mm copper, but I'm loathed to start lifting floors looking for a leak; it's only 3 radiators so thinking of surface mounting with new 10mm PB...

Bosch oven cooling fan comes on spontaneously; very hot resistor. NOW WITH PHOTO

Hi all, I have a Bosch oven with a cooling fan that will come on when it feels like sometimes for hours on end. I've had the top off, and found a resistor that looks burnt. This same resistor is burning hot to the touch even with the oven sat idle. The resistor seems to be part of a thermostat...

Thermostatic shower bar groans and pulses.

I've fitted a new bathroom and put in a shower cubicle. The thermostatic bar does not work very well, it's difficult to regulate temperature and it groans and pulses or nothing comes out at all. The hot water comes from an old gravity fed system, and the cold is off the mains as opposed to the...

    Excavating near hedge roots.

I'm currently digging the footings for an extension. As per the pics I am removing a small retaining wall. I also want to remove the soil from behind it, stopping about 800mm from the trunks of that 10ft Beech hedge. My question is, is there a danger of damaging the roots? Anyone with...

To "conservatory", or "extension", that is the question.

I am planning a conservatory/extension, and am unsure which way to go. It will be as per these before and after drawings. I've also shown a photo of it currently. The advantage of a conservatory is that it does not need to be signed off by building regs, but it would mean I would have to have a...

Found this when starting digging footings for conservatory.

I presume it's the power supply to the house? I'm surprised since this is the back of the house, and electricity meter is on the outside wall of the front of the house. What's the solution? If I have to, I could just reduce the width of conservatory from 6m to 5.6m to avoid it.

Conservatory incorporating existing retaining wall. Good idea?

Hi all, I'm considering building as conservatory that incorporates the retaining wall shown in the photos. As it is, it would be a perfect dwarf wall that I could extend to form the rest of it. Good or bad idea?

Using Wagner paint sprayer - which of these 2 paints should I go for?

I have a Wagner paint sprayer that I want to paint a whole room indiscriminately with (walls, ceiling and woodwork) in white. Does anyone have experience of either of these 2 paints, and would you know if it's thin enough to use in a sprayer? https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p31297 or...

Replacing just opening part of window.

The PVC Corner of the opening part of my double glazed window has been snapped off after an attempted break in. Is it possible to just buy the opening window unit? Looks pretty straight forward to screw it into the hinges. Thanks.

Led downlights in flat with concrete floors - fire rated?

I am considering fitting led downlights to the ceiling of a purpose built flat with concrete floors I.e the flat above has a slab of concrete separating it from the one below. The ceiling void is only about 55mm so I'm a bit limited on which downlights will fit; is it ok to use non fire rated...

    Spray painting entire room white.

I have a rental flat that for years now, between tenants, I have been painting magnolia with white eggshell woodwork. I've noticed recently that new "luxury" flats seem to go for the all white look. If this is now in vogue, it got me thinking about just masking windows, handles etc, and...

Wiring extractor fan into outside light.

I have a dedicated radial circuit from my CU that feeds 2 outside PIR lights. The outside cable to this conveniently passes the position on the outside wall where I intend to fit an extractor fan for my bathroom. Can the t&e cable going to the outside light be spurred off for a proximity sensor...

Will Humidistat extractor fan operate properly near open window?

I have tenants who seem incapable of opening the bathroom window during/after a shower, so I want to fit an extractor fan. I'm eyeing up the humidistat ones, but how would they work if fitted net to an open window? Would the outside humidity influence the sensor and cause it to potentially never...

Equivalent of "rad-weld" for basin waste?

Hi all, I can hear a slow drip coming from hidden waste pipes from my bathroom basin waste. I'm loathed to have to cut into the tiled wall to gain access; is there some sort of automotive "rad-weld" type equivalent to stop a slight leak like this? I realise this is not a pressurised closed...

Adhesive film protection for wood floor

Hi all, I've recently fitted a beautiful wooden floor. With a family including children I am now paranoid about damage to this floor. In fact it looks so good, that it would break my heart to see it deterioate; I'm almost regretting fitting it. :( I fitted it as a selling point really as...

Wiring a USB socket into lighting circuit.

I am planning a shelf near my front door as a convenient place to leave mobile phones. It would be even more convenient if I could get a USB charging socket to it too. However it's not close to a power socket. It is very close however to a light switch. I can't find a "light switch with...

Toilet with integrated basin in cistern.

Hi all, I'm after this from B&Q: but they have none available, and haven't had for the last couple of weeks. Anyone know of an alternative? This B&Q one is £198, and the only other alternative I can find is nearer £500!

Wet room proposal - can I use this directly as a drain? PICS

I've bought a house with a sort of annex ground floor toilet/cloakroom. My plan is to turn this into a wet room. Some pics: Now the back of the basin is accessed from this outside door. You can see the sink drains to the waste pipe in the floor: This rear access make it...

Pictures of before and after, proposed door replacement.

Hi all, The first picture shows my current work in progress house. The plan is to replace the back door by extending the window, as per the second pic of a neighbour's house. [/URL] Does anyone have any knowledge on the construction of these 1970s houses? Would I need to brick up the...

Drilling through wall to fit vents. PICS

I want to rid a flat of condensation by fitting vents to the walls. My first preference would be one of these but then I'd need a 127mm core drill which is gonna cost me £50 (unless I hire one). So I'm also considering a these . They are the cheaper option and I wouldn't need a core...
