It's a strange 'hole' - from a few pictures it would appear to be a cellar complete with door and power cables evident rather than, as has been reported, a 'sink-hole'

makes me thing of a shop basement with pavement lights, very common in older parts of London, a grid of iron or rc with glass lenses, where the pavement light has collapsed, having previously been covered over with asphalt or, in this case, pavers.

The description speaks of the woman emerging from the shop's basement.
