I can just about remember farthings. Used to fascinate me that some of the copper coins you'd get back then were Victorian. I think the silver coins had long been sorted out as having higher silver content.

They had a wren on them?

Funny - I can remember that but I can't remember my own address!

Sounds like foreign talk. You're not one of those immigrants we hear so much about are you? :) Homestly most of those wods mean nothing to me and I'm over 50. Wasn't there a florin too? No idea what a bob was. I do remember copper coloured coins as big as a hand. Almost.

Well you can't be far over fifty if you don't remember pre-decimal coins (1971 for the changeover)

a bob was a shilling or 12 d/pence.

I remember putting pennies on the railway track and trying to find them after the train had passed - usually ovoid and about 2-3" long

The pyramid block of ice called the Jubbly, where all of the flavour ( if there was any) was concentrated in a corner?
Creamola Foam? Almost guaranteed tooth rot and diabetes in later life?
John :)

Thing was with Jubblys (Jubblies?) You got a lot of cold stuff for the money. :)
Were they 3d or 6d I can't remember?

Ahh the Jubbly (still around but a tiny little memory of it's former self)

I forgotten Creamola foam - not a natural ingredient harmed in it's making!

Tin peashooters. Lovely unsafe nasty sharp edges! :) Wonder any of us have got any eyes left!

The orange drinks in Woolies with the fake oranges floating in the tank on top. Hot peanuts, and the pink and white icecream they did.

How did we survive 50 years ago?
We drank water from the tap not a bottle and nobody knew about the dangers of lead poisoning so even cribs were painted with brightly colored lead based paint. Medicine and Bottles with tablets did not have child proof lids

No seat belts or air bags in cars, nobody knew or if they did told our parents smoking and drinking was bad for the baby, kids shared coke from one bottle, soda had masses of sugar and we ate real white bread and butter and everything else including full fat milk that we are now told is bad for you

Parents couldn't reach us ( no mobiles ) and most of the day we would be out playing with friends and parents knew we would be safe with hardly any weirdos wandering the streets. If we got caught doing stuff we shouldn't the cops would take us home and we may well have a got a hiding for breaking the law ( but no do gooders saying mustn't smack children ). And if we played up in school the same applied.

While playing we got cuts and bruises and the occasional tear in jeans but it was just part of being a kid and no visit to the hospital.

We had no fancy games but could play for hours making a Go cart or a new tree swing and for other games most times we would find a ball and whatever we could use as a bat. or in the summer all jump into the nearest place we could find and if the water wasn't that clean we just didn't swallow it.

We rode our bikes with no helmets and doing whatever stunts we could ( bikes were so much heavier and hard waring ) and always had punctures to repair or get dad to help with.

If we didn't get in the team we were not good enough and that was that.

But most of all we were allowed to be kids

To dream, to invent and to play.

It's no wonder that the generation that grew up then created some of the most innovative and exciting technology we have today

Thanks for those years and all those "BAD THINGS" that is why we are who we are today

For the educated amongst us.......
The Beezer comic gave us a free 'whacker' on occasion......made from a triangle of card and brown paper, when flipped by hand produced a satisfactory bang guaranteed to make the odd granny shoite herself
For future university candidates, there were Superman DC or Marvel publications which made us believe it was fine to jump from high buildings ( the garage roof ).
Me - I was Biggles incarnate or some other creation from Capt. W.E. Johns - Algy or Ginger, I think.
John :)

On confectionery, anyone remember when Fry's chocolate cream bars were available in different flavours in the same bar?
Yes, I used to like them.
Why do they so often stop doing things that were popular?
