fines for middle lane hogging

When the law changes then you can do it. Until then - you will lose your licence.

Same goes for hogging the middle lane now joe.

I refuse to duck into the truck lane on safety grounds. If it empty or with plenty of room then fine. If it's busy - I'll sit in the middle lane on the speed limit. You can go in the silly lane on the right if you like. Is that OK with you?

Please read the rules joe, or even some of the posts I've made. What you've said is absolutely in line with the Highway Code and the new law.

You DON'T have to drive in the truck lane UNLESS it is empty or there is plenty of room.

You can sit in the middle lane at whatever speed you like for as long as you like if the left hand lane is busy and you're moving at a speed that is faster than the vehicles in that lane.

I.e you're only going to get done if you're driving in the middle lane when the left hand lane is clearly empty for the foreseeable distance ahead.

First of all someone needs to clear up the misconception of a middle lane hogging.

What is a middle lane hogging?

according to my understanding

A middle lane hogger is one who is doing roughly 50/60mph in the middle lane. whilst the 1st lane is quite clear and with very light traffic, He is oblivious or purposely ignorant, to any following traffic behind him closely and in particular to HGVs, busses and coaches, and other traffic that is prohibited from using the 3rd lane to overtake. whilst the 1st lane is clear as a bell.

Other traffic that can use the 3rd lane to overtake a hogger is not bothered that much as other cars can overtake him at 70mph, and then move back in middle lane whilst the general speed of 1st lane is around 50/60mph.

Our Motorways simply can't hold all the traffic in 1st lane, it is practically impossible to have all the traffic forced into nearside lane and use the middle lane for overtaking, so what then is the purpose of the 3rd lane? grow plants LIKE Joe said.

Got it now?

Jebus I thought we'd just got this sorted

A lane hogger is anyone driving in lane 2 or 3 (at any speed) when the lane to their left is empty.

It's not a matter of moving over when someone approaches you from behind, it's a matter of looking to drive in the left hand lane at all times unless over taking a slower moving vehicle

If we all start driving in the nearside lane, then I am afraid there will be a lot more deaths due to people broken down on hard shoulders waiting for assistance, get run into by sleepy and tired drivers who veer out of lanes often, TBH, it is nothing more than harassment on motorist and another money making scheme,

There are genuine middle lane hoggers, it is them you need to sort out not thousands of drivers who are cruising along the middle lane around 70mph and moving into nearside lane mean a lot more in and out maneuver and with that goes the risk of accidents.

If it is about cutting road side deaths, then this will actually cause the opposite effect, in fact if anything a middle lane hogger helps cuts deaths down as he slows down following traffic, he is actually doing everyone a favour, better to be late than never! though I hate middle lane hoggers!

Don't forget the Highway code is outdated, it was written in the 18th Century when we drove horse carts and the motorways were full of horse manure! Things need to move in fast lane now, we live in 21st century.

No what I mean is Highway code was written back when we had cars like Ford anglia whose top speed was 69MPH! and had 4 speed gear box and when doing 69mph the engine was revving mad at 5400RPM!

Now we have cars that cruise along at 70 doing 2600rpm! and better suspension, and handling and braking.

There far more cars on the roads now, even a 3 lane motorways aren't fully capable of accommodating all modern traffic volume.

hey I passed my driving test in 1974! I bet if I sat for todays test, I would fail the first time! But then again remember I don't drive a Ford Anglia, I have a car that can genuinely top 140mph, according to test reports by Auto car!

Read the whole tread mike, virtually everything you've mentioned has already been covered.

Probably the only exception is the sleepy driver thing.

If you think about it though a sleepy driver in the middle lane could veer left or right as he dozes off. Ie into the inside or outside lane of the motorway. It's 50:50 which way the car veers.

That same sleepy driver that is now driving in the left hand because of this new law will either veer into the hard shoulder or the middle lane.

As there will always be more traffic in the inside and outside lane of a motorway than on the hard shoulder, so the chances of that sleep driver causing an accident is actually less because if he veers left when he snoozes he's going to go into a lane (the hard shoulder) where there is considerably less chance of hitting another vehicle....also he will go over a rumble strip first (which will hopefully wake him up as they are suppose to do).

I am sure the Police will only stop real hoggers, not those who are driving constantly in middle lane doing about 70 and not holding anyone behind, and there are lots of slower moving traffic in nearside lane, and it is hardly any point in moving back and forth between 1st and 2nd lane.

Hogging should mean holding back other traffic in 2nd and 3rd lane, simple! and sorted now. Now add this clause to the Highway code. It needs updating.

And don't forget it is equally an offence to drive at slow speed even in the 1st lane, anything less than 40 may be considered nuisance and careless driving.

If a motorist is doing 70 in the middle lane what law is he breaking?
They're going to take money off people for doing nothing wrong now, bstrds.
If I ever get done for that I'll argue my case in court.

Quite obviously, the motorist is breaking the law of keeping to the left whenever possible. Motorways have three/ four lanes, The inside one is for traffic, but the other 2/3 are for overtaking only. Ah bloody hate these people who stay in the middle/3rd lane , when the re's nothing whatsoever in the inside lane for a mile. If you want to overtake them, you have to pull across 2/3 lanes of the motorway. I for one am glad to see the government taking a stance on these plebs who don't ever read the highway code (and if they have,,,,, actually put it into practice)

If they are travelling at the speed limit then you'll never catch them will you?

Middle lane hogging is simply breaking the rules of the highway code and now the law and should rightly be punished.
If you are so pious about the law and claim you drive at 70mph why do you wish to break the law by not using the inside lane when appropriate?

Because no-one can catch me - unless you choose to observe whichever rules suit you. You simply want to hog the middle lane at a higher speed. What do you think the outside lane is for?
