I ended up at the Falklands after the conflict and 99% of the residents were British. This is a non starter the Falklands is British .

I'd forgotten about the Gibraltar aspect. Spain has long seen the Falklands as proxy for Gibraltar and there is a strong opinion in some parts of Spain that Gibraltar must be 'de-colonised'.

Gibraltar won't survive Brexit in the medium term. Now we're out we have no way to block Spain within the EU and no real weight to block them diplomatically from the outside.
