Holy Smoke

Makes perfect sense to me, drugs used for medical reasons in a controlled and prescribed manner is perfectly normal, people walking around committing crimes and under the guise of being high as a kite is not acceptable. Are you suggesting we legalise anaesthetic's used by surgeons to self administer too. Drugs that are giving the user hallucinations and is sat on a bus or train next to you, be ok with that would you?

The nutter who's necked a bottle of vodka. Is he legal?

I watched an episode of Portillo's train journeys recently and he chatted with a woman in Preston* who'd signed 'The Pledge' to abstain from alcohol. She pointed out pure alcohol was a poison to the body. She has a point. Prohibition showed how difficult it is to curtail a habit that can become addiction, and people still struggle with it to this day. Drinking a couple of pints isn't going to do much harm; likewise, smoking a couple of spliffs won't do much harm, either.

It's a matter of self-control.

Fun Fact# 17: Joseph Livesey recorded the Preston Temperance Society meeting in 1833 in which the word 'teetotal" is said to have been born. During a speech made by Richard Turner, who had a speech impediment, he remarked that partial abstinence from intoxicating liquors would not do; they must insist upon tee-tee-tee total abstinence.

But that is the difference between an addict and a casual user. At what point does a casual user become an addict? The user may think he is in control and is not an addict but the reality may be very different. Same with alcoholic's, they don't realise how drink has a grip over them.

Experts on drug use and control have consistently been overridden by politicians seeking to appease constituents whose opinions make no sense

Not just on drug use and control.
The vocal rabble will hold sway.
An educated and critical electorate scares the governing classes.

Unfortunately, I fear it will only get worse.

should doctors be allowed to prescribe treatments that involve the use of magic mushrooms and other potentially useful psychedelic drugs? asks Aunty Beeb, in an interesting article that provides good and bad experiences, fuelling the debate on the ethics of decriminalisation. 'shrooms on the NHS? It'll never catch on, right?
