STAY ALERT

Personally I felt that after that pile of burbling sh*te that BOJO spouted last night it will be the end of him and the bumbling bunch of a**hats around him. I voted for BJ purely on his promise to take us out of the EU. There was no mention back then of covid-19 nor any other viable person to vote for. So far this government, in my opinion, have done little to, effectively, prevent the spread. We should have been TOTALLY locked down and that lockdown enforced with proper police powers and military curfews. We should have completely closed our borders to EVERYBODY including illegal immigrants who should have been have been forcibly turned back. There are numerous other "we should haves" none of which happened. BJ has said that anyone entering this country now will be, EVENTUALLY, quarantined, unless your French, WTF?????? I don't know whether starmer, or whatever his name is, wanted an early end to lockdown. I don't think he did BUT where the hell are the, so called, opposition in all of this. I don't see a lot "opposing." The Welsh, the Scots and the Irish have gone their own way. No point, their borders are wide open and BJ has opened the way for loads of, potentially, covid-19 carriers to go there. I hope I'm wrong but I can see this strategy causing many many more deaths. We are fighting a war. A war that is as every bit of a threat to our national security and our very lives as any other war. If we had done what we are doing now during WW2 we would have been "under the jackboot" very very quickly. BJ needs to Uturn this present thinking around NOW TODAY. That wont happen.........GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY.......it's all we have left and by heck we are going to need it.

If you've been working why would you get any lockdown cash? Sounds like benefits fraud to me.

I’m assuming Ryler is self employed. As far as I understand, the S/E will get the cash payment (lockdown cash?) whether they work throughout or not.

I can accept and understand their ideological positions, but don't they run these policies past a couple of people to identify glaringly obvious problems, before releasing them on the public?
It's a rhetorical question really, because it's obvious to me that they don't.

The other problem that I can see, is where do these people quarantine themselves?
And what control is in place to ensure it happens?
They are expected to go to a private residence and give the address at the airport upon arrival. I doubt anyone will check on them because it's not like we've a history of doing things correctly...!

They should just shut the borders. That's what other countries have done but it's a bit late now anyway.

Yes I think that is the case, I have set up my application ready for Wednesday and nothing has been mentioned about proving lack of work, although there might be a declaration on the final form

A bit more clarity would be nice.

The flights thing makes some sense. You can't quarantine deliveries from the EU or their drivers without the worst of the Brexit predictions all coming true instantly. Claiming a quarantine for them would be insane, so it isn't being suggested (Good idea Boris). You could try to quarantine all passenger traffic but it'd have so many holes you could drive a bus through it (see what I did there?).

The air travel quarantine makes a bit of sense, although it is the definition of locking the barn door after the horse has escaped. I'm amazed there's anywhere that wants Brits to fly there at the moment.
However travellers from France and Ireland are exempted from quarantine, and not all EU internal borders have been reintroduced.
And in order to get deliveries in to keep the UK at least fed then these drivers will be visiting many countries.
So it will be quarantine in theory only.
(it only took a few people to spread it around the world in the first place)

But come brexit, if there is no deal then border controls will be imposed on top of any quarantine.
(just in time for another possible virus wave)
Social distancing at customs control should be interesting!

Pete, you could argue for a harsher lockdown. However, Sweden seem to have taken a "softer" line than us regarding lockdown restrictions but seem (unless I am misunderstanding the situation) to be having more success keeping numbers down.

Great post - you arent blindly supporting Johnson because you voted for him: I admire your honesty, there is far too much tribalism in politics where people refuse to accept any criticism of their party.

Andrew Bridgen got caught out by Piers Morgan, he kept saying 'the govts message is clear, then couldnt say whether we are allowed to visit somebody from another household provided we keep 2m apart, or not.'

on the news earlier: 'massive queues at the dartford tunnel'...........

I guess that'll be fun. I can imagine writing a letter to one of my relatives or friends (not that it will apply to me).
Dear friend/relative,
You know you agreed I could stay at your house while I was visiting UK, for a few days.
I now have to provide your address and stay in your house all the time I am there, in case I have the virus.
Will that be OK?
I know it's pointless me coming now because I'm not allowed out for the very reason I was coming, but I can't get a refund on the tickets now. So I may as well still come and visit you.
Yours in jest
Bobby.

Of course I know Bobby is me, Old Friend, although I don't believe we are old friends. (might be Old Beans though)
Why did you address your comment to sodthisforfun, instead of me.
I put the confused smiley for both of us, not just me.

Agree.

What the fck was that. What about the people with kids who need to go back to school which are closed and cant palm them off to grandparents.

It's all as clear as mud as RnG commented we have a 2nd peak on the way real soon.

Why the **** didnt he say we are staying alert but where we can we must all wear face masks to remind everyone visually as well as reduce contagion.
Are they really so afraid of all stocks not reaching the nhs?

What bojo should have done is.

Show remorse at the people who have died, the sacrifices people have made, the mistakes that have been made.

Then explained how the Government has set up a helpine and advice service for employees and employers to begin a discussion in how to back to work, if you have someone vulnerable you live with at home - what pratical steps you need to take and the Government to provide basic ppe, example - you should change into work clothes leave the house on return take clothes off immediately and wash them or bag them to wash at once. People are not experts in infectious control.

If you need to travel via public transport then wear mask and gloves, all buses transport links have hand sanitizer available. Buses to work on half capacity. Employers to stagger shifts if possible, if not then to provide some form of protection which emplpyee can leave at work.

This is not going to be resolved by everyone deciding what to do themselves it needs leadership.

The mention of schools reopening was just a pointless teaser.

All things said, I do not like this Government or its response but by jove would I still want them to put an effective plan in place. The whole country is suffering because of this lack of leadership. Neither should you force people back to work without guidance and neither should employers and the wider economy remain in stasis.

It's a shame that this was a unique opportunity to rebalanace and reshape the econmy so that more people could benefit from a fairer redistribution of wealth. However it seem the Governments aim is to return to 'normal'. After the second world war there was common public agreement to bring in the welfare state and NHS. The Government if it was not bent on trying to PR their way out of this disaster could create a new civic contract with the public.

This response will be the missed opportunity of a lifetime.

We could actually build up our manufacturing sector and ally it with a strategy to locate new factories and facilties as part of the Northern regeneration. The current system penalises companies that employ people but rewards people who bank land. By taxing land via LVT and lowering employment taxes such as NI you could release land into the market and make it cheaper to employ people.
